Co-extinction is one of the cause of loss of biodiversity as when a species become extinct, the plant and animal species associated with it in an obligatory manner, also  become extinct.
For example,
(i) In plant pollinator mutualism, extinction of one results in the extinction of other. ‘
(ii) If a host fish become extinct, the unique , parasites depending on it would also become extinct.

The other causes of loss of biodiversity are:

  1. Habitat loss fragmentation
  2. Over-exploitation
  3. Invasion of alien species.
