Plants climb in different ways. Some, like clematis, are very weak and have twisting stems which climb up other stronger plants. As the stems touch the other plants they grow more quickly on one side and so curl around the other plant. Some plants, like ivy, grow small roots on their stems and these help them to grow up walls. Peas and marrows have special coiled tendrils which wind around a support. Virginia creeper has little pads like suckers which cling to a wall or other surface. Climbing roses and
blackberries use their sharp spines to hold on to surfaces or other plants.
