Above the cochlea in the inner ear are three tiny, fluid-filled, semi-circular canals. These loops are the organs of balance. Each contains small pieces of chalky substance that are in contact with sensitive cells. When we move, the chalk triggers these cells to send signals to the brain. The loop detects up-and-down motion, another forward-and-backward motion, the third side-to-side movement. So whichever way we move, even if our eyes are shut, the brain is informed.
