The skin is the waterproof outer layer of the body. It protects our body from sunshine, keeps germs out, and keeps us at the right temperature. The skin is the heaviest of the body’s organs.

Skin layers : Our skin has two main layers. The top layer is called the epidermis. The layer below, which hairs grow from, is called the dermis. Fat under the skin cushions us from knocks and bangs.

Skin colour : The skin’s colour is created by a chemical called melanin. The more melanin you have in your skin, the darker it will be.

Keratin : Skin is made of tiny parts called cells. These cells are made from a tough material called keratin.
