The body's main waste substances are the gas carbon dioxide (produced during respiration), urea (from breaking down excess proteins), and water and salts that the body does not need. The excretory organs excrete waste. They are the lungs, the kidneys, the liver and the skin. The lungs, for example, get rid of carbon dioxide. The kidneys get rid of water and other substances, such as salts. Waste products from the liver are taken to the kidneys and excreted in urine, or they are excreted in bile, and expelled through the gut.
