No one is exactly sure why we need to sleep. Of course, sleeping rests the body and it is thought that during sleep we repair our tissues, grow new cells and recover  from the day's activities. Our brains are still very active while we sleep and some people think that the brain sorts through the day's events during this time, organising  new information and fitting it in with previous information. This may help us to learn from new experiences. A newborn baby needs 16 hours of sleep each day; a  person aged 65 needs only 6 hours. Some people sleepwalk. Nobody knows what causes sleep-walking. Parts of the brain that control movement and speech stay awake. The person may speak, sit up and even walk, but they do not recall anything when they wake up.
